Master the language and orientation The Apple Watch experience makes the difference between a watch that just works and one that adapts to you. If you switch wrists, prefer the crown on the wrong side, or use multiple languages āāevery day, adjusting these preferences will save you time and avoid counterintuitive twists and taps, including gestures like the double touchHere's how to set everything up in no time, both from the watch itself and from your iPhone using the Watch app.
In addition to the position, the language and regional format influence menus, dictation, date formats, numbers, and more; and even include accessibility settings like Adjust your Apple Watch with VoiceOver.
We explain the exact menu paths that appear on each device, the names of the most common options, and the minor differences you may find on some models or versions. The guide includes clear steps and practical commentary so you don't get confused when finding each setting.
Set Apple Watch orientation: wrist and crown

The orientation of the clock determines two key things: in which direction wrist you wear the Apple Watch and which side you prefer the Digital Crown on. By adjusting this, turning the crown will scroll the screen in the direction you expect, and raising your wrist will turn on the display correctly, without any awkward twisting or backwards content.
From the Apple Watch itself you can do it in seconds: open Settings, go to General and then to the option Orientation. In some translations or versions you will see the name Position instead of Orientation, but the setting is the same. Inside, indicate whether you're wearing the watch on your left or right wrist and whether you want the crown on one side or the other.
The change is also available on the iPhone. Open the Watch app, go to the My watch, go to General and tap Orientation (depending on the version, it may be called Watch Orientation). There you can change the same settings: wrist and crown position. This is useful if you prefer to configure everything in a larger, more comfortable way.
When you switch wrists or reposition the Digital Crown, you'll notice that turning it naturally shifts the content up and down. This tweaks the behavior so that scrolling is consistent with the movement of your hand, and for the wrist-raise gesture to activate the screen in the correct direction. If you want to dig deeper into the physical and gesture controls, check out our guide to Buttons and gestures on your Apple WatchIf you just placed the crown on the opposite side, don't forget to go over this section to get it to your liking.
- On the Apple Watch: Open Settings, go to General and tap Orientation (or Position if it appears that way), choose your preferred wrist and crown side.
- On iPhone with the Watch app: Tap My Watch, go to General, and then tap Orientation (or Watch Orientation) to set your wrist and crown.
Whether Orientation or Position appears depends on the system language and watch software version, but the goal is identical: adjust the activation by raising the wrist and the Digital Crown's scrolling feel so the Apple Watch behaves intuitively.
Change the language and regional format on your Apple Watch

To change the system language and region formats (for example, date, time, or numbers), it's most convenient to use your iPhone. Open the Watch app, go to the My watch, go to General and select Language & Region. From there, you can adjust the watch language and regional format to suit your preferences or the country you're in.
You'll see a customization option, which allows you to choose your language and region independently. When you activate it, the system offers you to add a new language and organize the order of preference if you use multiple languages. It's perfect if you want a primary and secondary language for compatible apps or content.
The typical route is like this: Watch app on the iPhone, My Watch tab, General section, and within the section Language and regionBy following that sequence, you can change the essentials without touching anything else on the clock, and it will apply to menus, dictation, and other system elements.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone, Go to My Watch and tap General.
- Go to Language and Region to see the available settings.
- Activate personalization if you want to separate language from regional format.
- Choose Add Language to incorporate an additional language and define the order of preference.
Once the change is made, the Apple Watch adapts the menu translations and the formats of the region (times, dates, units), which is especially useful if you travel between countries or if you prefer a language other than your iPhone's for your watch. If you speak multiple languages, having a clear hierarchy of preferences prevents surprises in compatible apps.
If you don't see those exact terms when searching for Language and Region, don't worry: depending on the iPhone language and the version installed, the setting name may vary slightly, but it's always found under General in the My Watch tab. Take a moment to review each option and confirm that the language you set is the one you want as your primary language.
Quick routes from the iPhone and names that may vary

One advantage of the iPhone's Watch app is that it groups all the watch settings into clear menus. If you're going to touch several parameters in a row, doing so from your phone is faster. Two sections that interest you for this topic are Orientation/Clock Orientation and Language & Region, both under General on the My Watch tab.
- Orientation or Clock Orientation: define wrist and crown side so that the screen activates and scrolls as you expect.
- Language and region: adjusts the system language and regional formats, with the ability to customize and add languages.
If you need to add a specific language, there's a sequence that usually works for all users. Start in the Watch app, go to the My Watch tab, tap General, and locate Language & Region. Inside, turn on Personalization and use the option. Add language to incorporate the new language. You can reorder the languages āāto decide which takes priority.
- Open Watch on iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
- Enter General and then in Language and region.
- Custom Activate and select Add Language to include another language in the list.
The name may appear in orientation Position instead of Orientation in some contexts. Don't get confused: both lead to the same thing. If you frequently change wrists or find it more comfortable to have the crown on the opposite edge, save your preferences so the Digital Crown's movement will match the screen scrolling.
Remember that by setting the default wrist, the system optimizes the gesture of raising your wrist to turn on the screen. When you turn the crown, the interface elements move in the expected direction, avoiding the "backwards" feeling. This small detail greatly improves the daily comfort when browsing lists, notifications, and apps.
Helpful hint: The subscriptions menu in Settings is not related
In some menu paths you may see references to managing subscriptions from Settings. This section isn't part of the language or orientation settings, but it's good to know where it is to avoid confusion if you encounter it along the way.
- On the Apple Watch, Open Settings and tap your name (your account).
- Go to Subscriptions to see which ones are active or expired.
- Select a subscription to check prices, duration or change the contracted option.
- If you need it, Use Cancel Subscription to end your subscription. You can also reactivate it later by choosing the monthly or annual plan.
This block of options is independent of languages āāand clock orientation. It's nice to have it localized, but it doesn't affect the language, region, wrist or crown settingsIf your goal is to adjust how content is displayed or what language the Apple Watch interface appears in, focus on General > Orientation/Position and General > Language & Region within the Watch app or in Settings on the watch itself.
Usa General > Orientation (or Position) when you want to change wrists or move the crown to the other side and ensure that the turn scrolls the screen in the expected direction. And enter General > Language and Region in the Watch app on your iPhone when you're looking to adjust your watch's primary language, add another language, or change how dates and numbers are displayed. These two panels cover the essentials for customizing your Apple Watch to suit your usage style.
